Honestly I haven't come across too many ya books that look appealing! As a teacher I try to hit on all of the levels because there's always a chance you have a higher leveled reader in your class. A lot of the ya's I still have to read. Recently I read Diary of a Wimpy Kid (both books, my 2nd graders like them), and 3 of the Spiderwick Cronicles books. Stargirl was okay by Jerry Spinelli. It's a middle-school level book even though it's about kids in high school. There's a sequel to it as well. I've purchased...
Wrecked - E.R. Frank
Criss Cross - Lynne Rae Perkins
The Face on the Milk Carton - Caroline Cooney (never read it!)
Ask Me No Questions - Mark Budhos
The Book Thief - Markus Zusak (supposed to be EXCELLENT)
I want to order "Cut" which is about a teen who self mutilates, and "Where I Want to Be."
Plus I have a lot of books about the Holocaust too geared towards 4th, 5th, and 6th grade. I'm keeping my fingers crossed to teach 4th grade in the future. Those books will come in handy. I have Devil's Arithmatic, Milkweek, and a ton of others.
A lot of teen stuff looks like shit to me! (probably because I was not the sappy romantic read girl in high school) Gossip Girl, all these books about popularity, romances, tearjerkers, etc. I was more your R.L. Stine teen, John Grisham fan, Great Gatsby, To Kill a Mockingbird, etc in upper middle school and high school. I don't like reading books that sound like they are written by a fourteen or fifteen year old girl. Especially the chic lit for adults too. I feel like it kills my brain cells. Hahah.
Stop adding books to read woman!!! Kidding. I FINALLY received Twilight in the mail the other day. Don't know when I'll get around to read it but I will let you know how I liked it. No shame reading YA! I order high school books from Scholastic hahah.
So you enjoyed Twilight too and the other books in the series. I ordered the book for myself through Scholastic. The author is coming out with a 4th book in the series too.
Nope...never read it. Unlike you, I'm not much into the sweeping historical epic type books. But I might be reading it soon...although there are too many books I want to read right now!
So far the timeline is working. I didn't overwhelm myself with too many books to read each month and have a bunch of "extras" incase I finish my three early for the month.
As for January, I've finished 2 out of the 5. The one book I can easily knock out this weekend so that leaves me with The Hours and In Cold Blood.
so it looks like we are going to read some of the same books: reading lolita in tehran, in cold blood, end of fashion (which i liked). you'll have to tell me how "i am america and so can you" is. also lolita. i had that in my hands but put it back.
It's only more addictive than MySpace if you're a librarian!!! As for the Golden Compass, I read it a couple years ago...and I wasn't gripped enough to read the next one until all the brouhaha about anti-Christian messages. I liked it enough but I didn't love it. So I can't give it 5 stars. The Amber Spyglass, on the other hand, I would give 6 stars if that were an option. It's incredible.
