I thought it was sort of funny when I saw this as an option on this site, but then I realized that this is probably more important than 99% of what else I've read in my life. It's well written, incredibly powerful and you can see inspiration from God in it.

What a difference from any other book, this guy was like he grew up in Ohio with me. I love that he used the language that I grew up with--a little hick and to the point. He was all about how you can do things yourself to save money and would show simple point and shoot pics I'm sure he took himself of how to do things. Great source if you want to try things yourself.

This was a useful book, but you have to get past the author's chip on her shoulder. Her husband was a contractor so she starts off really defensively. Then throughout the whole thing she mocks and strongly discourages home owners from trying to do any of the work themselves, just a bad bad idea. And what if you don't have enough money to pay a contractor to do all those things? Or if you would just like to learn, try and save by doing it? Who cares, bad idea, do without.

On the upside, she really did have some good advice if you plan to renovate, I even had to check it out twice to make sure I'd remembered all the important parts.

This is more of a history lesson of the Eichler and it has some stunning advertising pictures from the 50s and 60s that they used. I love the background and details about how they advertised and were trying to appeal to a new modern family, but not sterile modern--a very useable space. Great shots of the homes, would be a good coffee table book--but it's $50!

Rarely do I use a 5 star, but this book is exactly what I was looking for when it came to remodeling our kitchen. I'd never heard of an "Eichler" before moving here, but in Sunnyvale where we now live, Eichlers are all over the place and were a mid-century phenomenon. Our house was built by a close peer of Eichler and before Eichler made it big so it has a lot of similar elements--good and bad.

We wanted to try to redo our kitchen to sort of match the original so this book gave some excellent ideas of how others have done it.
