"I thoroughly enjoyed Skybreaker. I read the Airborne and this was a great sequel. Plenty of atmosphere, suspence and some romance too. I love the alternate world where airships rule.

As the civil war was being waged, two slaves, John M. Washington and Wallace Turnage, seized the moment and escaped across Confederate lines and into the union army. Both men left narratives or autobiographies that were passed down through friends and family and only recently came to attention of historians. Blight, a foremost authority on emancipation and professor at Yale University, published them with no changes to grammar or spelling, adding a lengthy analysis that reveals how the narratives came to light, puts them in historical context, and fills in biographical gaps with genealogical information. An incredible amount of work went into filling in the gaps of their lives....less

In a world in which elegance, beauty, and singing ability are revered, Aza is large, awkward, and homely. Her voice, though, is heavenly and she has the unusual gift of voice manipulation that she calls illusing. Aza is invited by a duchess, a regular guest at her family's inn, act as her companion and accompany her to the palace to attend the kings wedding. When the beautiful though selfish new queen discovers Azas gift for throwing her voice and for mimicry, she sees a way of protecting her reputation and disguising her own lack of talent. She threatens Aza and her family until Aza aggrees to deceive the court into believing that Ivi is a gifted singer. Eventually Aza is found out and banished, but not before the prince falls in love with her. Don't miss the extraordinary audio version of this book....less

This book took a bit to get into, but once you do, it's full of suspense and action. Not having read the first book in the series, Stoneheart, I was lost at first, even though there is an introduction filling you in on the story thus far. It's a lot of information, and such a strange, complex world with statues that come to life, glints like Edie who see the past by touching stones, and makers like George who have powers over stone and can sculpt them. George and Edie are looking for the Gunner, a bronze statue of a character from WW! who comes to life, but must occupy his plinth every night at midnight. He has been kidnapped by the Walker, who kills glints for their heartstones. He gets evil powers from stones. George promises to protect Edie, but then he is swooped up by a flying gargoyle. Edie is tricked into a past London, where she has glinted herself being murdered by the Walker. Plenty of action ensues as George has to fight three duels to save himself and Edie from the Walker.
