Very interesting and at times exciting nonfiction. I don't think I've ever used all those words in the same sentence before!
Kapuscinski is a journalist from Poland who was a foreign correspondent all over the world over the course of many years. He recounts some of his travels to interesting locales while overlaying his favorite parts of the greek classic writer, Herodotus.
Not so much a story with a plot, but a collection of observations and essays of recent world history (China under Mao, African revolutions, the Middle East, etc) juxtaposed with sometimes very similar situations and locations but in ancient times.

I think one of my favorite children's books ever. The adventurous rat's boat sinks while he's sailing the world--he's saved by a whale and they spend time together and make friends while the whale takes him to shore on his back. They have a sad goodbye, but a few years later, the whale washes up on shore and the rat has the opportunity to save the whale's life. A great story about unlikely friendship!

Just pictures - but amazing pictures! My uncle gave us this book when I was little and I remember spending HOURS paging through it-- Each page is one letter of the alphabet and there's very detailed, bizarre, busy paintings with tons of objects in each one. Every object in the paintings begin with the letter of that page. The artist also painted himself into each picture.
