1984 for a new generation. I try to imagine what people must have thought in the nineteen fifties when they first read 1984, did they think that world was likely? Inevitable? The world of the circle seems all too likely to me. It is a world surrounde...more

I would say the description of this book is fairly accurate: "a fascinating often disturbing work of deconstruction" I feel like I know and understand Tintin better than before but it is possible to know/understand too much.

A different book than ghostwritten or cloud atlas. Less epic or magisterial and yet in many ways more impressive. I'm impressed at how different this book is from his earlier works and yet how excellent the writing and story still are. Historical nov...more

Chad Harbach
“There were no whys in a person's life, and very few hows. In the end, in search of useful wisdom, you could only come back to the most hackneyed concepts, like kindness, forbearance, infinite self patience.”
Chad Harbach, The Art of Fielding

John Green
“There are infinite numbers between 0 and 1. There's .1 and .12 and .112 and an infinite collection of others. Of course, there is a bigger infinite set of numbers between 0 and 2, or between 0 and a million. Some infinities are bigger than other infinities. A writer we used to like taught us that. There are days, many of them, when I resent the size of my unbounded set. I want more numbers than I'm likely to get, and God, I want more numbers for Augustus Waters than he got. But, Gus, my love, I cannot tell you how thankful I am for our little infinity. I wouldn't trade it for the world. You gave me a forever within the numbered days, and I'm grateful.”
John Green, The Fault in Our Stars

Rachel Joyce
“You got up, and you did something. And if trying to find a way when you don't even know you can get there isn't a small miracle; then I don't know what is.”
Rachel Joyce, The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry

John Green
“Some infinities are bigger than other infinities.”
John Green, The Fault in Our Stars

Rachel Joyce
“The world was made up of people putting one foot in front of the other; and a life might appear ordinary simply because the person living it had been doing so for a long time.”
Rachel Joyce, The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry
