This is a unique and imaginative collection of stories--a sort of novel-in-stories--linked by family relationship, and by family oddity. Doctor Olaf van Schuler is a medical man in seventeenth-century New York, fascinated with then-taboo dissections. He's also rather crazy. No great surprise, considering that his mother is a lunatic, whom he cages and yearns to cure.

Each story introduces one of van Schuler's descendants, either in a starring role or as a supporting player. Most walk the edge of the medicine of their day, and Menger-Anderson's research into their marginal arts--lobotomy, reading the bumps of the skull, electrotherapy, even modern-day plastic surgery--adds a sparkle to these beautifully-told tales of loners, oddballs, medical obsessives and other fascinating characters.

I loved this book. Really loved it.
