Gosh this book was hard to get through. It has all the grand elements of Kazantakis - Jesus, Communism, Nationalism, and Whatnot - but it doesn't really go anywhere. I mean really, it doesn't go anywhere. He stretches about one chapter worth of plot over a three hundred page book at the end of which nothing worthwhile has happened except for a lot of people dying and God disappointing you. Which I guess could be interesting, and has been interesting in some of his other work, but it fell worse than flat in this one. Well golly, I just can't remember the last time I read a book with a happy ending, like tie it up in a few pages and make it all happier than a little girl's princess fantasy kind of happy ending. It was, uh, refreshing?

Happy ending aside, Dundy really REALLY gets this narrator's voice spot on. The only problem is that sometimes the voice can get kind of annoying. Only sometimes though.
