I read this non-fiction book, one which I would not typically pick up and read, because it was recommended to me by my girlfriend, a woman who has lived in Saudi as an outsider and seen the way in which women are treated there. Thus, this was a book

Lord of Chaos by Robert Jordan
"Lord of Chaos is still quite similar to it's preceding entries in The Wheel of Time, yet I found vast improvements in this novel that made this one my favourite so far.
Yes, the pace is still too slow. Yes, there is a lot of extensive detail. Yes,..." Read more of this review »

Jonathan and 14 other people liked Conor's status update
Conor
Conor is 28% done with Elantris: Pain lost its power when other things became more important. Kahar didn't need a potion or an Aon to save him-he just needed something to do.

Not sure, but I don't think this is completely legit medical advice.
Jonathan and 19 other people liked Conor's status update
Conor
Conor is 64% done with Elantris: Raoden shook his head, realizing he had simply been staring at her, enjoying her features (boobs) rather than paying attention to her words.

Man stuff. (I added the information in the brackets to explain what my boy Raoden was thinking btw).

G.K. Chesterton
“In one sense, at any rate, it is more valuable to read bad literature than good literature. Good literature may tell us the mind of one man; but bad literature may tell us the mind of many men. A good novel tells us the truth about its hero; but a bad novel tells us the truth about its author. It does much more than that, it tells us the truth about its readers; and, oddly enough, it tells us this all the more the more cynical and immoral be the motive of its manufacture. The more dishonest a book is as a book the more honest it is as a public document. A sincere novel exhibits the simplicity of one particular man; an insincere novel exhibits the simplicity of mankind. The pedantic decisions and definable readjustments of man may be found in scrolls and statute books and scriptures; but men's basic assumptions and everlasting energies are to be found in penny dreadfuls and halfpenny novelettes. Thus a man, like many men of real culture in our day, might learn from good literature nothing except the power to appreciate good literature. But from bad literature he might learn to govern empires and look over the map of mankind.”
G.K. Chesterton, Heretics

William H. Gass
“In general, I would think that at present prose writers are much in advance of the poets. In the old days, I read more poetry than prose, but now it is in prose where you find things being put together well, where there is great ambition, and equal talent. Poets have gotten so careless, it is a disgrace. You can’t pick up a page. All the words slide off.”
William H. Gass

J.I. Packer
“Wisdom is the power to see, and the inclination to choose, the best and highest goal, together with the surest means of attaining it.”
J.I. Packer, Knowing God

George V. Higgins
“This life's hard, but it's harder if you're stupid.”
George V. Higgins, The Friends of Eddie Coyle

J.I. Packer
“God was happy without humans before they were made; he would have continued happy had he simply destroyed them after they had sinned; but as it is he has set his love upon particular sinners, and this means that, by his own free voluntary choice, he will not know perfect and unmixed happiness again till he has brought every one of them to heaven. He has in effect resolved that henceforth for all eternity his happiness shall be conditional upon ours.”
J.I. Packer, Knowing God
