Wow - this book is so good. My eyes were truly opened to the horrific legacy of slavery, not only in the US, but in Canada, England and even in Africa. It is very well written and it grabs you and doesn't let go until the very end. As an immigrant with a Russian name (taken from a famous Russian novel) who is not Russian, I really identified with main character of this book, Gogul, who is named after a Russian author and not Russian. That's not the only reason why. Very few books allow me to re-experience my own journey as an immigrant in the US and coming to terms with what that means. I was able to re-experience the pain of being different and wanting to just fit in. Wanting to change your name because the name that was given to you was so heavy and perhaps did not fully capture who you were - or perhaps it did and you didn't like that at all. I loved being able to go through that again with Gogul and to see him arrive at a place where he recognizes his parents' sacrifices and their courage and love. I loved all the people in this book. Lahiri did a great job of developing each character in a beautiful loving manner. This is a great book.
