I really, really enjoyed this book. I have never read anything about Sherlock Holmes & I was totally engrossed. I also was very intrigued by the storyline of Jack the Ripper & the way this author used her imagination to solve the murders. I thought I might have already reviewed this book, but maybe I didn't. I didn't like it. In fact, I didn't even finish it. I keep meaning to put a category for my choosing that says, "Didn't Care to Finish". There were several not nice words in this book, within the first 60 pages. The story seemed to intriguing, so I was very sad that I was so turned off. Lots of sex, LOTS of sexual references. I was disappointed. I so loved Persian Pickle Club, I was looking forward to another quick, but enjoyable reading experience. However, this book was slow to start, which I dislike very much and the characters really weren't that endearing, I wouldn't remember them next week is what I'm trying to say. And as the story does get going, there are acts of crime that will curdle your stomach. One I am still trying to erase from my mind. The movie threw me WAY OFF. I was even concerned about my kids watching it due to the scary nature of the storyline, but all in all the moral of the story was GREAT! Being thankful for what you have instead of searching out something better that's really not good for you at all. ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE!!! One of my favorites since the Thirteenth Tale! The story sucks you in from the first page & just keeps going. The culture, the characters are rich and full of life and the story is unpredictable and scandolous and fearful and so many things. I read it. I finished it. I didn't love it though. I did enjoy the way the author took us through each family member's life & thoughts separately. But, I really wasn't that interested in any of the characters. This was certainly an interesting book. I liked the background setting, 1795, London, the war with France and astronomers, which is something I have never read about before in a fictional book. I am always uncomfortable with sexual situations, but just try to skip over them and get to the meat of the book.
