    			  What a beautiful, perfect, heartbreaking book. It's short, but took me a long time to read because I read and reread paragraphs endlessly. The writing is rich, packing so much information but delicately, subtly. Dan Brown should worship at Morrison's feet and learn how to weave detail into every word without making it seem like a history lesson. This book did that rare, wonderful thing: it changed me.
<br/>

    			  I'd read this book once before, and I don't know how I could have forgotten what happens-- but I did. When I got to it this time, it was like someone had punched me. I could barely breathe. This book is absolutely brilliant. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because in the first 60 pages or so, there are just far too many descriptions of the locale and of nature. It doesn't really pick up steam and make you care about the characters till about halfway through. Or at least, it didn't for me.

    			  nothing too special. very british in its sensibility, made me think I was reading Agatha Christie or something, with its nuanced character descriptions and dialogue, but overall, it didn't change my life in any way. Interesting for anyone curious about adoption and its ramifications, though, and not an unpleasant read.

    			  This book was really terrible. I gave it two stars because there is some decent writing here and there, but the plot is absolutely depressing. The blurb on the back of the back said that it's about a woman who defies the men in her life. On the contrary, everything the protagonist did was simply a reaction to the men--and not to better her life. Her rebellions were more the petulant, immature ones of a teenager. The cut-your-nose-off-to-spite-your-face kind. And the character showed zero growth or maturity through the course of the book, which begins when she is 17 and ends about 25 years later, after her relationship with her son (the final man who defines her life) has taken a particularly disturbing turn. One of the least sympathetic and most uninspiring women I've ever been subject to an entire novel about...
