This was a really great book. It was full of suspense and all sorts of subplots and societal quirks and power dynamics. I really liked it. Basically it's about a guy named Jacob Jankowski (he's polish) and he is at Cornell studying to become a vet. Then he finds out that his parents died in a car crash and he runs away and hops a train. It turns out to be a circus train! He signs on as the circus' vet but the book is set in the depression so the circus doesn't usually pay the workers (but always the performers) and the equestrian director is a paranoid schizophrenic and he like flips out and treats the animals horribly. It's a really good book. I couldn't put it down!!!!...less

My mom recommended this book...um yeah, it's a "biomythography" by Audre Lorde. It's another book about being gay and black. She seems to have a lot of those... It is very similar to Black Lesbian in White America, because it talks about her loneliness and feeling of isolation. I had a hard time getting through it because it moves so quickly, and yet so slowly chronicling every little detail. It is a lot of information to take in and te pages always seem a lot longer than they actually are. All in all though, it was a quite interesting book which talks a lot about growing up and being who you are and stuff....less

This is the last book in the circle opens quartet. It is very good. It is about this girl mage who is 18 and she finds a boy with lightning magic and she becomes his teacher. But the plot geeets twisted when some of their lower-class friends are strangled and the pair has to find the killer before he kills anymore of the Yaskedasi (entertainers in the slum-like part of the city)get killed. It is a page turner, and a weel written book....less

This book is basically an autobiography of a gay black woman living in America. (i know you couldn't guess that by the title!) It talks a lot about the women's movement and a lot about the civil rights movement and how even though they were both liberation movements for an oppressed people, they didn't really work together or even necesarily like the other movement. It talked about loneliness and not having support from people like you and just about being oppressed in at least 3 ways. I thought that the author of this book was very knowledgable and passionate about the issues and wrote the book out of pure feelings and experiences. I thought it was very good....less

This book has a lot of fantasy and magic stuff in it, it's got dragons and wizards and all sorts of stuff. it's fun to read though and it's a pretty easy read....less

This is a memoir about a guy who climbed Mt. Everest. The climb to the summit went well until a huge storm hit with hurricane speed winds and a temperature of over a hundred degrees below zero. 4 people were dead by morning and one, so almost dead that she was left for dead because she would not have been able to make it down alive. This book is really sad, but very well written. A huge lesson is to not take for granted what we have, because life is very delicate and you never know what's going to happen. I recommend this book highly because I didn't know anything about mountain climbing and I learned a lot....less

This book is the third in the Circle Opens series. Daja makes friends with a firefighter named Bennat Ladadrun (Ben). Ben works nobly to fight the fires that crop up in the all-wood city that Daja is staying in. Daja resolves to make him "living metal" gloves that will allow him to push aside flaming planks to get to people trapped in the houses. When Daja learns that all of the recent fires she's help put out were set, she must help track down the culprit.
I really likek Tamora Pierces books, and the mystery in this book is told from the detectives' persective and from the culprit's perspective, which makes it really fun to read. I would recommend it if you like fantasy books with magic. Also, it's hard to put it down once you've started. ...less
