I dislike self-help books in general.

I think good non-fiction must be well laid out and organized, or else it's pretty useless. I don't go for the stream of consciousness stuff.

I don't care for endless elaboration in fiction; Dickensian stuff drives me insane. Good detail can be succinct.

I don't generally enjoy poetry written after 1100 AD/CE, although I am fond of William Blake, the WW I British poets, and WB Yeats. Just the cadence of Robert Frost gives me a headache.

What do I like? I like to be surprised, and I adore books that have underlying anthropological treasure troves--things like Ammonite by Nicola Griffith, the Pliocene series by Julian May, and even The Tombs of Atuan by Ursula K. LeGuin. All of these books touched me deeply, and I re-read them regularly.

I appreciate mind candy books--sometimes, I don't want to overthink my reading; hence, I enjoy JD Robb/Nora Roberts. It's just fun.
