I wasn't sure what I thought about this book because a lot of it came off like paint-by-numbers gothic cheese. I actually preferred Margaret's bits to Vida Winter's memories most of the time. But I thought the book had a completely satisfying ending. All the threads were tied up very neatly, and I was impressed. I wasn't especially moved by the story or the characters, but I appreciate good plotting.

ETA: And it was a loving homage to the genre, which I also appreciate. Sometimes it seemed like the author had a checklist of gothic conventions she was ticking off, but still.
