These stories defy explanation. All I can say is that this is truly Dekker's finest. The story of redemption interwoven into two completely different realities, plus a love story? What more could I ask for?

I tend to agree with most of the reviews I see here. I have read several of the Kay Scarpetta books, so I thought surely I would enjoy this one too. While it only took me about a day to read, I too felt cheated at the end. Cornwell took the time to set up the plot, but then skipped a large portion of the story to get to the end without explaining how the characters reached their conclusion. It was like Yakko of the Animaniacs, when asked to count to 100, he said, "1, 2, skip a few, 99, 100."

Ted Dekker never fails to deliver. He wraps suspense in a perfectly spun story that keeps me on the edge of my seat, not wanting to put the book down! BMD is certainly no exception. The main character, Ryan, has just returned from a tour in Iraq where he was captured and tortured by an insurgent. He is emotionally broken, and wants nothing more than to return home to his estranged wife and daughter and try to put his life back together.

SPOLIER ALERT
He is greeted instead with a wife who wants a divorce so she can marry someone else, and a daughter who hates his guts. Enter BoneMan, the serial killer who abducts young girls and kills them by methodically breaking every bone in their bodies. BoneMan (or the person everyone THINKS is BoneMan) has just been released from prison on a technicality. Meanwhile, the real BoneMan, who has patiently waited for the right time, finds Ryan's daughter and decides she will be his next victim.

What follows is a lot of bone-breaking, killing, and mind games, but suffice it to say, in the end BoneMan gets what's coming to him. And Ryan and his daughter escape to face another day, together.
