"Book 3 of Rick Riordans's fabulous Percy Jackson series picks up in the winter and not long after the events of the Sea of Monsters. I have read this book before but I've forgotten a lot of it so I decided to read it again just for the hell of it.

Arr...more Book 3 of Rick Riordans's fabulous Percy Jackson series picks up in the winter and not long after the events of the Sea of Monsters. I have read this book before but I've forgotten a lot of it so I decided to read it again just for the hell of it.

Arriving at a military boarding school in search of their friend Grover; Percy, Annabeth and Thalia they discover that there are a set of siblings that are demigods which is rare. Grover, having detected that the vice-principal is a monster, there is a full scale mini battle in which sees Percy hurt and his shield, made by his younger half-brother Tyson, damaged. Annabeth is taken by the monster which turns out to be a manticore while a frantic Percy and co watching. The reminding demigods (and Grover) are rescued in the nick of time by the goddess Artemis and her Hunters much to Thalia's despite.

Now. at the beginning of the book, Thalia is just introduced. There is basically no indication to what has been happening to her over the time after the events of Sea of Monsters other then the fact that she and Annabeth have been going to the same all girls school. Another thing that is unexplained is the arrival of Blackjack, Percy's apparent 'pet' Pegasus.

The book introduce readers to the Hunters of Artemis and Artemis, the goddess of the hunt. The group of maidens are led by Zoe Nightshade who turns out to be the daughter of the Titan lord Atlas. Artemis' twins brother Apollo makes an appearance in this book as well and he claims to be the 'oldest' just to spite his sister who is actually the oldest and helped their mother give birth to him. The book also introduces the Di Angelo siblings, Bianca and Nico who later turn out to be the cousins of Percy and Thalia through their uncle, Hades.

There is a bit of death in this book, both Zoe and Bianca die. It is very devastating in any book to lose a beloved character even if the character is minor.

Overall, the book is a fantastic read for fans of Riordan's books. I certainly am glad that I re-read it. 4 stars for almost unnoticeable plotholes.(less)"
