I give this 2.5 stars. The book started off well and kept my interest until about halfway through, when it all began to fall apart. The book essentially comes in 2 parts: 1) Quentin's admission to and time at Brakebills, and 2) the time thereafter. The second part of the book was extremely disconnected from the first. Although the author attempted to weave the Fillory storyline throughout, it didn't quite work, and, as a result, the second half of the book felt like an entirely different story. In the second part, there were interesting ideas about a narrative that doubles-back around and plays with the notion of linear chronology, but this was explored in like 2 pages of 200.
This is not a book that I anticipate re-reading.

I liked it pretty well -- it took me a little while to get through it (about a week or so) and it probably did not have to be so long, but I liked it. One of the things that particularly struck me -- which would definitely not have struck me in high school -- was how long ago 1990 (when the book is set) seems when reading about it now.
