This book seems produced by a wholly different author than "The City and the City." It does deal with some of the same themes, but it's wildly more inventive, fully realized, and fun. Too bad it's weighted down with interminable exposition, exhausting descriptive passages, and a ten-ton vocabulary that makes me want to set fire to the author's copy of Roget's. Seriously, CM? We're going to call it "thaumaturgy" instead of "magic"? REALLY? I sorta-kinda liked this one, but in the end, it wasn't worth the heavy lifting.

I may revise my opinion upward depending on how well this book sticks in my craw. It was a pleasure to read: lyrical, honest, and a tiny bit challenging. More after HL meeting.

Update:
I'm sticking with 3 stars. I did like this book, but I didn't find myself thinking about it much in the weeks between when I finished it and the HL meeting. I do still think the narrator, Hans, while timid in his actions, was fearless in his observations, looking straight in the face the terror of an ordinary, lonely life. He does find something beautiful in cricket and in his friend Chuck Ramkissoon, though. A happy ending, of a sort.
