If read properly, readers of Native Son should be as disillusioned as the characters from the book. We cannot ignore the role that society plays in the creation of deviant individuals. It is Bigger’s attorney Mr. Max who cautions, “I beg you to recognize human life draped in a form and guise alien to ours, but springing from a soil plowed and sown by all our hands.” We cannot be too surprised when an individual such as Bigger, a person whose family is kept in poor economic conditions by the greed of someone who feigns compassion, reacts in violence to the “hate that was his life.” When you are born into a society that views you as a criminal long before you commit a crime, when you live in a society that automatically finds you guilty before you are proven innocent, you will almost certainly fulfill that prophecy one day.
