This is China Miéville's most political book yet. And it's truly compelling and layered. There are a lot of way's to interpret it. The one that fit best to me was: There is nothing magical about political repression.

This was chosen as the "One City, One Book" book. I'm not sure why. The characters are depressing and the plot isn't terribly interesting. I can't bring myself to care. He's not a bad writer, but it's just not a very compelling book.

You really don't know where this one is going until it gets there. It's set in a semi-magical world after nuclear holocaust. Reminds me a bit of a Sean Stewart landscape. Great characters, though a little difficult to keep track of it at times. (Admi ...more

I love Bill Bryson and will read anything he writes. These are columns that he wrote when he moved to New England with his family after spending many years in (old) England. Funny, charming, insightful. All that good Bryson stuff.

In this book, Pat Conroy steals from himself. Orphans, ball games, mysterious religious backgrounds, child abuse, alcoholism, epic high school friendships, Charleston, the Citadel, suicide... It's all there. And he's written it better before.
