The Amateur Astronomer's Journal by Neil Slorance
"Aw, man. This was such a charming wee book. I used to have a telescope when I was little and go stargazing with my dad, so this was just really nice. Been a bit stressed over the last month, and this makes me want to copy the book and go dig out t..." Read more of this review »

Liked this one too; just now as much as some of the others. Possibly because the only really likable characters didn't become prominent until quite late on in the story.

Shellworlds, though - what a great concept.

Probably my 2nd-favourite Culture book after Excession. This one's a slow boiler, and then when things happen, they happen quietly. Fun.

Mark Twain
“You believe in a book that has talking animals, wizards, witches, demons, sticks turning into snakes, burning bushes, food falling from the sky, people walking on water, and all sorts of magical, absurd and primitive stories, and you say that we are the ones that need help?”
Mark Twain

Haruki Murakami
“And once the storm is over, you won’t remember how you made it through, how you managed to survive. You won’t even be sure, whether the storm is really over. But one thing is certain. When you come out of the storm, you won’t be the same person who walked in. That’s what this storm’s all about.”
Haruki Murakami

Mark Twain
“Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.”
Mark Twain

Grant Morrison
“The 'medium' is unaware of its attractiveness, that's all. Everyone loves comics. I've proven this to my own satisfaction by handing them out to acountants, insurance brokers, hairdressers, mothers of children, black belts, pop stars, taxi drivers, painters, lesbians, doctors etc. etc. The X-Files, Buffy, the Matrix, X-Men - mainstream culture is not what it once was when science fiction and comics fans huddled in cellars like Gnostic Christians dodging the Romans. We should come up into the light soon before we suffocate.”
Grant Morrison

Bill Watterson
“Ms. Wormwood: Calvin, can you tell us what Lewis and Clark did?
Calvin: No, but I can recite the secret superhero origin of each member of Captain Napalm's Thermonuclear League of Liberty.
Ms. Wormwood: See me after class, Calvin.
Calvin: [retrospectively] I'm not dumb. I just have a command of thoroughly useless information.”
Bill Watterson
