I think this book would have been better if it was longer. I understand how Ishmael gets into the mentality of a soldier but I don't understand how he loses that mentality. He mentioned that he had friends who went back to fighting and I don't unders...more

I really liked the first essay in this book which is what caused me to buy it but I can't say I enjoyed the rest of it at all. It's very introspective, but I didn't find that to be a good thing. I had to skip the last 10 pages because I got so bored.

It was cool to read this after just having come back from Barcelona and I found it interesting. Not sure if this was due to translation or because I don't know the culture well enough but there were some aspects of the story that went over my head. E...more

I enjoyed this book but I felt like I didn't know where it was going most of the time and couldn't tell what exactly it was about. It had a cheesy ending. I've liked other books of Mawer's more.

I loved this book until the very last chapter. Then it took me 3 days to read the last 20 pages and I went from loving this book to looking it. I feel like it took a weird metaphysical turn right at the end that was completely unnecessary. Like the a...more

I really enjoyed everything about this book! Historical fiction is one of my favorite genres and my mother was a dressmaker for some time so the intricacies of this world are very interesting to me. Made me want to go shopping for beautiful clothes!

I hate when they kill off characters I like! ugh... this one really hurt. great story though, I really don't even know how they come up with this stuff. It's so brutal.

This book was OK but if I had to recommend a book set in India this wouldn't be it. Maybe it's my North American idealism working but I found no likeable characters and nothing uplifting about the story. Maybe that's the point... but my heart wasn't...more

The More Loving One

Looking up at the stars, I know quite well
That, for all they care, I can go to hell,
But on earth indifference is the least
We have to dread from man or beast.

How should we like it were stars to burn
With a passion for us we could not return?
If equal affection cannot be,
Let the more loving one be me.

Admirer as I think I am
Of stars that do not give a damn,
I cannot, now I see them, say
I missed one terribly all day.

Were all stars to disappear or die,
I should learn to look at an empty sky
And feel its total dark sublime,
Though this might take me a little time.”
