I had a really hard time getting through the first 250 pages of this book. I found it a little unnecessarily long and was getting bored. Really glad I kept reading because the last 1/2 of the book was so captivating I couldn't put it down.

I found this book to be very similar to Diaz's last 2 books - both in storyline and characters which is why I'm giving it 3/5. Diaz is a great writer but I got bored reading what felt like the same story I already read.

I loved reading this book and this opened up my mind so much to the experience that blind people go through. It was very well written and I couldn't put it down. I did find it ironic to be reading about the blind experience.

I really enjoyed the historical fiction aspect of this book, but found the beginning hard to get into. Once I was halfway through I couldn't put it down and stayed up way past my bedtime to finish it.

I finished this book in one day but not because it was incredible, more because I just wanted to get to the end and have it be over. Not a single character was redeemable for me, and I don't find it believable that so many people can be such shitty h ...more

I have no idea how the author concocted such an imaginative vibrant world. This is probably the most creative piece of writing I have ever read. It was a staff recommendation at a little bookshop and I'm so glad I picked it up. I really enjoyed readi ...more

I enjoyed this book because it told of John's experience in Africa as a Lost Boy, but it also told of his new life in America and his struggle to reconcile his old identity with his new one. I loved that aspect of it because I've read many books wher ...more

The More Loving One

Looking up at the stars, I know quite well
That, for all they care, I can go to hell,
But on earth indifference is the least
We have to dread from man or beast.

How should we like it were stars to burn
With a passion for us we could not return?
If equal affection cannot be,
Let the more loving one be me.

Admirer as I think I am
Of stars that do not give a damn,
I cannot, now I see them, say
I missed one terribly all day.

Were all stars to disappear or die,
I should learn to look at an empty sky
And feel its total dark sublime,
Though this might take me a little time.”
