My fun, before-bed book (read: the "this is not a legal book" book). Yes, it's fluffy and a fun read that moves right along, but it has some depth that surprised me, namely Rouse' honesty about his shortcomings in his decisions.
What's clear is that Wade Rouse can tell a story and hit the high and low notes effortlessly in one paragraph. The same complexity and range doesn't extend to his characterization of his "supporting cast," but that's not how his storytelling works.
His self-effacing humor is the constant theme in his writing and in the events of the book. It creates the ground of the most interesting part of the story: his awareness of where he has "sold out," how he has betrayed himself, and when he has been a coward.

I can't begin to explain what a powerful book this is.
For those who are triggered by rape accounts, this is not the book for you, as this autobiography provides the most graphic, brutal depiction of rape I've encountered.
Parsell gives his coming out story in an environment filled with the inescapable complexities of survival, power, homophobia and racism.
He captures the nuances of personalities and conveys the intangibles of emotion and nonverbal communication.
His storytelling makes him an artist. Interspersed with his prison account is a story of growing up in an alienated family with misbegotten concepts of masculinity and devastating silences.
