My stepson brought my attention to this book because he was so interested in reading it, mostly drawn to the awesomeness that is the Leviathan. I thought I would be interested because it's steampunk and I like steampunk lit. In the end, I'm somewhat mixed in regards to the book.

There are elements I enjoyed and found fascinating. I'm fascinated that Westerfield has taken World War I and turned it into a (potential) conflict between Darwinists and Clankers. I love the imagination of the world he's created and how he's tweaked and transformed the early-twentieth-century geopolitical forces into a realistic alternative history. Corbin hasn't finished reading it yet, but I wonder if he'll get much out of the history of the book with his limited knowledge of Darwin and WWI. At least he'll enjoy the genetic and mechanic beasties.

But the book was slow. The two main characters didn't meet up until halfway through. Much of that dawdling seemed unnecessary, but perhaps he thought he needed it to create the world? Not sure. I'm also not pleased with where the book ended, although it's to be expected since this is the first book in a series. Mostly though, I was just reminded that I generally don't cotton to Westerfield's writing.

I'm torn with books by Sanchez. He provides a much needed diversity in gay YA lit, but his writing tends toward didacticism and immaturity. When it comes down to it, I see him as a MG author (in terms of style and content) who tackles YA themes. This leads to disappointing reading experiences.

That said, I think he did a great thing in this book in approaching how the internal conflict of a boy who was raped by a trusted family member externalizes itself, both in self-abuse (cutting) and physical violence.
