I don't know what type of book I was expecting. Marley was an okay book but it didn't have me in tears. I can't say the same about Trixie's story as told by her "dad". Dean writes with the same passion and degree of intelligence and insight we've come to expect from his novels and this book is no exception. The feelings he and his wife had for this darling Golden Retriever were palpable. I kept seeing Sadie's little face and that happy butt wiggle she gets -- Sadie is my son's dog -- and she has the same coloring as Trixie. I also didn't know the Koontz family was so involved with companion dogs --my sister and her husband both have trained companion dogs (they're both in wheelchairs). My sister's last dog was a Golden and she said she couldn't have asked for a more devoted animal. Non-dog lovers will scoff and snicker but they're the losers here. A delightful little quirky book that had me mesmerized from the first page. A little bit of magic, humor, paranormal and intrigue, plus the mother from hell, you have to love everything about the Sugar Queen. Set in Stalin's Russia in 1933, this book is historical fiction of the highest caliber. I loved Furnivall's writing which almost made you feel the cold, the pain and the hunger. I doubt I would have been as strong as Sofia or Anna and can't even begin to imagine existing under those conditions. ]]>
