I'm a sucker for a good girl bildungsroman, but I was pretty disappointing that there was less about the girls' college days, and more focusing on what happened after, but still a satisfying, interesting read that turns out to be way deeper (child sex slavery?) than the typical woman-author-book-with-an-almost-pastel-cover. And subtle feminism! We need more subtle feminist fiction books!

I'm not sure if it's just because I have been a fan for so long, but this was one of those books that pulled me in and wouldn't let me out of its grasp until I was done. Now I want to read it immediately again.

My mom enjoyed this book, and I was home on Xmas break so I picked it up. The only notable thing I can say about this book is that it caused me to isolate a pet peeve about writing: I absolutely abhor when - while writing a book full of characters with unique names - the author starts referring to characters as "the knitting shop owner," "the TV producer," or "the grad student." Many of these characters were finding themselves changing their lives, but the author was still referring to them as "the grad student." Flat as flat can be.

Jessica Valenti's books always skew a bit "pre-feminist" for my tastes, as her clear M.O. is to convert questioning females into feminists, but as a feminists, her books don't generally tell me much more than I already know.

I was disappointed, too, that Jessica starts off the book by giving thoughtful, insightful suggestions to sexist moments, but by the end, her suggestions are merely sentences and frequently jaded. "I don't know," she suggests after writing about sexist laws. "Move?"

I still love her writing and I absolutely cannot wait to read her book on "purity."

I found this sequel much better than the one preceding and following, as the balance of the magical other world and Victorian England boarding-school social woes was delicately played out, to the point where I was much more interested in the books.

Intrigued by how much I liked "Rebel Angels" I went out and bought the hardcover of the final book in the Gemma Doyle trilogy, and then immediately regretted it. There is much to admire about this trilogy, and many of the characters are completely lovable, but the alternate realm where much of this book takes place just doesn't make that much sense. There's no map or anything to guide readers, just protagonist Gemma's descriptions and her ideas of what is "good" and what is "bad" in these realms, but the character is again and again proved to be too trusting and naive. It was hard enough juggling Victorian England's customs and descriptions with the other realm's rules, so much that most of the book I wished there were no realms and Gemma just had ordinary, boarding school adventures without the magic.
