"I'm only just realizing that I've been on a food kick. CONSIDER THE FORK then SALT, SUGAR, FAT and now GULP. They've got overlapping (imbricated! One of my favorite words that I don't get to use anymore) subject matter, but cover different territory. Anyhow, I love that Roach's goal is to write a book about which people will say, "I thought it would be disgusting, but it's interesting!"" — May 19, 2013 08:29pm

| A friend recommended THE WORST HARD TIME to me years ago. She said it was one of the most gruesome disaster books she'd ever read, or something along those lines. I can't remember the exact words, but the sense of it stuck with me. With so many disas...more | |

is on page 22 of 432 of The Future of Nostalgia: "Modern nostalgia is a mourning for the impossibility of mythical return, for the loss of an enchanted world with clear borders and values; it could be a secular expression of a spiritual longing, a nostalgia for an absolute, a home that is both physical and spiritual, the edenic unity of time and space before entry into history. is on page 94 of 220 of How to Write Killer Historical Mysteries: So far this is full of all kinds of insightful and non-obvious advice, like, when writing you should consider using words. And olden times were different from now so you might research something. And perhaps you'd like to include a detective. This is probably a great book for people born yesterday and who have just learned to read five minutes ago. TBH I have no idea why I'm still reading it.

“To love. To be loved. To never forget your own insignificance. To never get used to the unspeakable violence and the vulgar disparity of life around you. To seek joy in the saddest places. To pursue beauty to its lair. To never simplify what is complicated or complicate what is simple. To respect strength, never power. Above all, to watch. To try and understand. To never look away. And never, never to forget.”
