Being a Jew puts him and his family in a precarious position but when his father, the legendary Moor sorcerer pays him a visit one night, it brings Baltasar and his aunt and uncle to the attention of the Malleus Maleficarum. Baltasar is forced to flee the only home he has ever known and when he gets a prophecy from the Baba Yaga that a great force is traveling west to end the world as we know it, Baltasar knows what he must do - kill the great Amir al-Katib.

As much as this story is about folklore, magic and religious persecution, it's also very much about colonialisation. Much of this story takes place on Columbus's famous voyage west in 1492. When the Baba Yaga speaks of a force moving west to destroy the world, what she is talking about is how colonialisation will destroy indigenous cultures and wipe language and history completely off the map. Even if a single battle had never been waged, the diseases the Europeans brought with them alone would have been enough to start the genocide which did eventually occur. Being Spanish, Baltasar could not conceive of the fact that it was the Spanish who were the threat. This is framed as is part of his optimistic nature rather than his Eurocentric view of the world.

Mlawski drew on a lot of folklore to write this book and it is evident. There were golems, unicorns, and many other fantastical creatures from a host of mythologies. It helped to make the world Mlawski created not only diverse but absolutely engaging. To use his magic, Balthasar had to rely on his ability to synthesize folklore and take elements from it. The magic was also different according to race and gender. The Ayiti having a different belief system than Balthasar showed that even though their culture was different and perhaps not at technologically advanced that they were powerful in their own right. Then there is Catilina who uses the Joan D'arc spell to present as male because there are thousands of stories in which women must become men or appear to be men to gain a modicum of respect.

Though Balthasar is the protagonist of this story, there are two very strong women - one being Catalina a fellow sorcerer and the other Jinniyah a half human half genie being. Catalina boards the Nina to escape a marriage to man that she does not know in order to make her own way in life. She is highly capable and challenges the sexism in the fairytale sleeping beauty. What Balthasar sees as a nice romantic tale with a happy ending, Catalina sees one revolving trap for the princess in question. Catalina constantly sets limits on Balthasar and keeps her best interest in mind at all times. She even acts when the sailors decide to kidnapp and rape some indigenous women. Catalina knows how hard it is for women in this world to escape being abused and to lead independent lives and she uses magic to change that as much as possible. Though her magic is based in the same concepts as Balthasar's, her experience and her gender allow her to interpret the stories differently and create different creatures.

Jinniyah is similarly an outcast but not because of gender but because she is half ifrit and half human. She doesn't really belong anywhere but she is smart and extremely knowledgeable. In some ways, it would be fair to say that she acts as a sort of conscience to Balthasar. She is desperate for Balthasar to reunite with his father Amir al-Katib and it's this desperation that leads to a reunion with the destruction/death of either father or son. In some ways, Jinniyah is very innocent.

He avoids seeing them as often as possible because Fortitude is a vampire who at this early stage in his development is far more human than vampire and his beliefs and concern for humanity does not mesh well with his the rest of his vampire family. This means not feeding from his mother as often as he should and being a vegetarian but if it will stave off the final change, it's a sacrifice Fortitude is more than willing to make.

Unfortunately, not being fully transitioned means that Fortitude is far more vulnerable than he even realises at first. When Luca enters his mother's territory and makes clear that he has a penchant for abducting and abusing young girls, Fortitude's far too human nature will not allow him to look the other way. His mother is forced to hire protection for him in the form of Suzume Hollis - a crafty Kitsune. Suzume turns out to be so much more as she helps Fortitude explore a world of supernaturals that he spent his entire life trying to avoid after his sister Prudence killed his human parents. To rescue a missing child, Fortitude must immerse himself in super natural culture and face the reality that no matter how human he appears, he is indeed a vampire.

When I picked up Generation V, what I expected was the typical angsting vampire story that we have been treated to, especially because of Fortitude's desire to remain human. This has long been a common trope in urban fantasy when it comes to vampires and it makes very little sense. Brennan deals with this by showing the cruelty of vampire nature as an absolute negative. None of the vampires in Fort's family cares that Luca is murdering pedophile and that is reason enough for me as a reader to see the coldness of a vampire nature as something to avoid rather than to aspire to. Brennan has also made other changes to what we have become accustomed to as modern day vampire lore. Rather than being immortal for instance, vampires are simply long lived. They reproduce by creating Renfields and then breeding them with each other to produce a child. This causes vampire reproduction to be very slow and in Europe, they are actually in danger of becoming extinct. They also become more vulnerable to the sunlight as they age. So as you can see, there are just enough changes in vampire lore to keep it interesting.

Though Generation V has a rare male lead, the female characters are all extremely strong though different. Madeleine is the matriarch of the family and she is aware of everything that goes on in her territory. While she is cold, she lacks the psychotic nature of her daughter Prudence,who desperately wants her independence. Prudence is cold, calculating and not even remotely human like. There is also Bhumika,who is Chivalry's (Fort's older brothers) wife. After allowing Chivalry to feed off of her for years she is dying slowly. At first one feels pity for her until we realise that she is not naive or dupe because she knew exactly what Chivalry was before she married him and went into it with her eyes open, though hopeful that the end result would be different. She counsels Fortitude and though frail of body, is clearly strong of mind. Then there is Suzume the kitsune. Suzume is technically a yako and true to her trickster spirit. She is always one step ahead of Fort and she is smart and capable. Suzume is also no afraid to use her sexuality and good looks to get the things that she wants. You can never tell if she is serious or playing a game, but the one thing that is certain, is that Suzume knows how she is and her capabilities.

If I have one complaint when it comes to gender it's the treatment of Beth. Beth is clearly polyamourous and yet it is treated like she is manipulative and trying to get one over on the men that she is involved with. Beth made it very clear to Fort that she didn't want a monogamous relationship and because of this, as a reader it is clear that Brennan meant for us to feel sorry for Fort. For Fort, part of coming into his own, is severing his ties with Beth and this is seen as an act of his evolving growth. For me this part of the Generation V, walked the line and often veered into slut shaming. Not everyone is built for monogamy and no one should be shamed for it.

But never did she think she’d be working for Hell – big corporate, everything she despises. And that would be in a normal workplace – but what about when your boss, Thomas, has actually sold his soul?

Of course, he wants it back – and he also wants Kate, much as he tries to focus on the business at hand. The question is whether he can live with the choices he has to make to get his soul back – and how deeply Kate is going to get enmeshed in these infernal affairs.

I’ll be honest, I didn’t expect to love this book. I thought this was a book with another corporation that was secretly a front for hell. I thought we were going to get another rich billionaire who is cruel and awful and mean but in would come the spunky manic pixie dream girl who would melt his heart and then everything would be hearts and flowers. I expected to hate it.

I was gleefully, wonderfully, blissfully wrong.

The whole concept of the book is one I haven’t come across before – Thomas trying to wriggle out of a contract he signed to sell his soul. He’s a really fascinating and surprisingly deep character that goes way beyond “oh he’s so rich and hot and rich and hot and hot and sexy and hot” we often see heroes described as. Yes he is hot, this is established early and then… not mentioned. Maggie’s attraction and shirtless pictures of him are allowed to speak volumes. Of course he’s hot, he wouldn’t appear shirtless in a glossy magazine if he weren’t, but that doesn’t mean every other chapter we need to describe every sculpted curve of abdominal muscles; so the book doesn’t. It was refreshing – Kate’s sexual attraction to Thomas was made clear and his appeal was maintained without devolving into the repetitive description that is so common. This allowed room for what really makes Thomas a meaty character – not just his sad tortured past (which is somewhat a requirement) but the issues he currently faces: the challenge of being sufficiently ruthless to actually get the job done. He has to kill people – and not only does he have to kill them, he has to be cruel to even get the names; as Yagi tells him repeatedly, if he’s not willing to be ruthless, to do anything, to risk anything to sacrifice anything how can he win against someone who is more than willing to do all of the above.

We have Thomas facing the possibility of metaphorically damning himself in order to save his soul. Especially since Yagi doesn’t see the point of wasting his time helping Thomas if he isn’t able to do what it takes to free himself.

Then we have Kate – the Crusading Fun Hippie Do Gooder, who always speaks up, will tolerate no evil and is ready to fight for the meek and the oppressed at all times. She has no filter, she says what she thinks with no censorship, regardless of how appropriate it is to the situation or how high and lofty the target of her criticism is.

Now take that archetype and add a heavy dose of realism. The crusader/Manic Pixie who faces the consequences of exposing his dad’s boss’s son’s crimes, who costs her father his dream job. The crusader who works in a whacky, non-conventional office that doesn’t follow the usual corporate rules – and it goes under. The dreamer, the moral crusader forced to move back in with her judgemental parents because she’s lost her job, the economy sucks and she can’t afford her standards and principles. Her family judges her and pressures her to “grow up” and “get a real job” and “join the real world.

And then they come together so excellently well, his ruthlessness mixed with both his lack of natural propensity for it and his own moral doubts he’s determined to be quashed meet her idealism – and her success with more compassionate means puts further doubt on his actions and path and draws him back to his conscience. While at the same time her passionate idealism gets diluted with a bit of heavy reality and the compromises that come with that; as well as being repeatedly confronted with the choice of a heavy paycheck (and the ability to rescue her family – and prove herself to them) vs her principles.

Which falls to the Amazons to stop her, as they would any Ancient running amok. Gina, the Air Amazon, is assigned to protect Zach, technological genius whose invention could hand Sekhmet the keys to the apocalypse.

Not that Zach knows it – or about magic, amazons, gods or the strange guys who can shock him to death with just a touch of their hands. After the second time he’s rendered unconscious, it’s going to be difficult for Gina to explain.

Especially since he may be the one for her – her soulmate just as her sisters have found. Which is going to be hard to pursue with the jealous and angry Richard, complete with his own agenda and his own ability to electrocute with a touch.

One thing I liked about the relationship in this book is that we got away from having a male love interest who was an authority figure over the Amazon – which meant we had less of the orders and instructions that didn’t work for me in Impetuous Amazon and made Reluctant Amazon so very dubious. Gina can talk to Zach as an equal, even a superior because of her greater knowledge and power.

Yet, the relationship was far more annoying to me. We have the extremely fast-forwarded falling in love from Gina and Zach which is accompanied by lots of excessively describing how distracting the other is though they never ever ever feel like this for anyone else, not even women Zach is sleeping with because her presence for the last few days is just so much more special than any woman ever. And, yes, she is a 26 year old virgin.

The primary source of conflict was brought by Richard, Son of Gaia and also crushing hard on Gina. So he and Zach hate each other. They hate each other form the very beginning, since Zach is established as Richard’s “competition” so quickly. They call each other childish names, they constantly bite at each other and they actually physically come to blows. Richard even tries to kill Zach in a moment of supremely ridiculous pettiness. Gina makes her choice clear over and over and is constantly ignored. This makes for endless interactions ruined by pettiness, jealousy, big strong he-man growling and other testosterone poisoned scenes. We even had a convoluted misunderstanding scene for extra jealous flounce.

The Amazon series does a good job about calling out a lot of sexism – like Gina referring to the misogyny in her old work place and objecting to being called “chick”; but then puts up with a whole lot of alpha male jealousy bullshit from the love interests.

Note that while these 2 men are locking antlers over Gina, there is a goddess of destruction trying to bring about the end of the world. This is what annoys me about a lot of paranormal romance with big dramatic background: your characters look petty if they pay each other’s humpable potential more attention than the actual end of the world.

This means that this review will probably just consist of the obligatory fanpoodling that happens when one of a readers favourite author released a new book. Lucky for you, The Grimoire of the Lamb is a novella so that means you won't have to tolerate much of my poodling.

The Grimoire of the Lamb is set four years before the events of Hounded. This means that while we still get Atticus and Oberon having an epic adventure in Egypt, Granuaile is missing. It all begins when a man from Egypt calls with the hope of purchasing one of Atticus' rare books. Nkosi Elkhashab is desperate to get his hand on the a grimoire, which appears to have nothing but recipes for cooking lamb, but Atticus decides that there has to be more to Elkhashab's desire than ancient culinary delights and does some research. When he learns that the grimoire contains 13 spells, which Elkhashab wants to use to "restore Egypt to its rightful place as supreme among the world," Atticus realises that no matter what happens, Elkhashab must not be allowed to possess it.

When Elkhashab manages to undo Atticus' magic and escape to Egypt, Atticus and Oberon have no choice but to follow. Like every other pantheon, Atticus is not exactly very friendly with the Gods. Before Atticus can even deal with Elkhashab, he must find a way to make peace with the goddess Bast, whose holy book he stole centuries ago.

Once again, Hearne's writing is laugh out loud funny. Atticus and Oberon have become so familiar, starting one of Hearne's books is like meeting an old friend. If I had not read any of Hearne's previous works I might well have found the character of Elkhashab and Atticus' commentary regarding Egyptian Gods offensive; however, when put into persepctive of how Hearne has written about the various pantheons which Hearne has had Atticus interact with, I find the treatment to be equal. It is still however a little sad that the only inclusion of POC in this novella were as antagonists. Similarly, women had a very small role to play as well, but given that The Grimoire of the Lamb is a novella, exceptions should most certainly be made.

Of course, this isn’t an easy task. Not least of which is trying to get the human form that houses Quan Yin to realise who they actually are. After numerous failed attempts, he reaches Ellena, middle aged divorcee who runs a book store in a rural town in the south of England.

Posing as her dog, with his student, Boudica (yes, that Boudica) posing as Fluffy, her cat, they work to try and help Ellena realise her true nature – and the wonder of the world around her

This book was not remotely how I pictured it would be, not from the title, and I think it’s very much going to be a Marmite book, one that very much depends on your taste and preferences.

This isn’t an exciting book. It isn’t an adventure book. It isn’t a book with shiny magic or magnificent powers or some mortal woman suddenly running around throwing lightning bolts and declaring herself to be Athena.

This is a book about philosophy and ways of seeing the world. It’s a book about viewpoints and perspectives and transcendence and the nature of reality. In this book the main characters aren’t the goddess, but the people – Hector and Boudica, trying to encourage Elena, the goddess, to achieve her true potential. And she isn’t a goddess of lightening or the hunt or fire; she’s Quan Yin, a goddess of compassion, of mercy. She doesn’t perform miracles, but her very presence in the world will increase the level of love and compassion felt by all things, subtly changing reality in a variety of ways to generally elevate the world and humanity.

Hector and Boudica try to inspire Elena. They try to protect her against things that would both shake her world view of goodness, but also things that would close her down, narrow her, focus her more on the mundane than in the higher, the spiritual and the greater. At the same time we also have Elena’s fears and worries as she becomes more disconnected, worrying as the mundane world becomes less important to her and her ties become more fragile.

We also see that Elena is not the first attempt to manifest Quan Yin and previous attempts had tried to help her achieve awareness but had failed on many levels and driving down several different paths

It’s all extremely deep, extremely thoughtful and extremely involved. It’s a book that makes you sit and think. It’s a book that makes you skim backwards and reread to be sure you actually understood that part. It’s a book that could use a re-reading for more nuance. It’s a book with elements you probably never will understand and are never meant to understand but will give you ideas to chew on for some time afterwards.

It’s also kind of like picking up a fantasy book and being force-fed a philosophy text book instead.
