That Collyn Milsted is even more brilliant than I had imagined! <br/>Seriously, I loved our Daughters of Huck meeting and am thankful for Collyn's contributions and reminders about Hamlet. She made the book tragic and unforgettable for me.

I have a new respect for the praying mantis, a creature I've always liked, but now totally love. One of the oddest books I've ever read in my life, but one I totally love and recommend. Thank heaven America had women like Lizzy Popper -- and hopefully we still do. OH, and I've asked every New Yorker I've run into in the last week (all two of them!) if they ever had Rhinegold beer!

great fun read -- nice break after reading The Hour I First Believed. Two 7year old girls lost and missing -- were they abducted? are they together? will the police find them? nice, simple, suspenseful, but one I recommend -- a little Jodi-Picoult-ish, but I couldn't stop reading until I found out what happened to Petra and Calli.

Yes, I totally agree with you about the Mike and Anna part. I found that part contrived and almost there to explain Silas' behavior. I wish their relationship had been a bit more developed or explained -- It was never explained why Mike and Meg weren't really clicking anyway. But other than that, I still liked the book -- I just wished that hadn't been there.

I loved this book! I loved the writing style, the various points of view, the flashbacks, and most importantly, the characters. Being a teacher of teens and then a mother of teens, I could totally relate to this book. Every one of the characters reminded me of a teenager I know in my own life-- J Dot and Sienna especially. I couldn't put it down. It's sad to say but I can see this book actually playing out in the real world -- maybe not the stuff Silas saw that sparked the event -- but everything else. I continue to like Anita Shreve books and highly recommend it!

I recommend this one --a page-turner,although incredibly sad in parts. It's the main story of Julia, a magazine writer in Paris discovering a Jewish round-up in the Holocaust. So, the book blends the two stories: Julia in the present, Sarah, a 10 year old girl, in the past being taken by the French police.. Although the details about the round-up and the camps were familiar to me and very graphic, I liked learning about this little-known event in French history. I always like books that connect historical facts -- plus, I liked Julia and was interested in her discoveries. Definitely a good read! Not too heavy, but intriguing -- a tad Jodi-Picoult-ish.

I actually ended up liking this book --- although it ended abruptly. It reminded me a lot of Carson McCullers or even a little Flannery O'Connor or Faulkner-like -- because it's a collection of these misfits --- the focus is on a family, but we also get glimpses of all the characters in this town. They're all so pitiful, lost, eccentric, etc. It took me a long time to read the book, however. I could only read about 25 pages a day, but I kept reading because I couldn't figure out how it would all end. I knew that there was no escape for these people and that their mundane lives would just continue on --- so I was intrigued how the author would wrap it up. The book's a little depressing. I would recommend it as a good read -- It was an Oprah book several years ago and I had bought it and stuck it on my shelf. Would love to chat with someone about it.
