A good story lost amidst a wandering plot outline and too many subplots. Green's narrating gets much better as the book progresses, giving me some hope and a glimmer of interest in continuing with the series, which half way through I did not have. But still, the first half of the book had a great deal of unnecessary clutter to cut through to get to the essential story. A good editor would have made all the difference, and I'd be definitely getting the next book, rather than merely contemplating it....less

Desperate for something to fill the recently-teased void that the Dresden Files fills to excess, I spent an hour in Borders this weekend looking for something similar. The best I found was this series by Simon R. Green. Much shorter than any of the Dresden books, these all seem more like novellas or long short stories, but I was desperate.
Well, so far, this one's ok. It reads as a bit forced, the world a tad artificial, and the main character a little too melodramatic. Jim Butcher's Harry Dresden is just perfectly balanced and fleshed out, and this book suffers in the comparrison. However, it's not terrible by any stretch of the imagination, and in the absence of any Dresden Files novels in the near future, it'll probably be good methadone to let me down from the supernatural noir detective genre into something more main stream until the next Dresden book comes out.

Finished it in Italy. The writing is repetive (how many times can you read "I opened my third eye, my inner eye, my private eye" and still take it seriously?), John Taylor is melodramatic, and the whole construct is a bit thin. But still, it's not a bad read....less

I love this universe! Don't judge it by the shabby TV show. The show was a travesty that corrupted the entire idea behind the books and minimized almost everything that makes them great. Each book is a fantastic adventure, while the over-all story arch proceeds and develops from book to book with admirable regularity....less
