<about>Reading is one of the central joys of my life. In the assorted decades of my life I’ve read hundreds upon hundreds of books over a multitude of topics. Instead of trying to list them all, I’ve decided to only go over the ones I’ve read recently, since the turn of the millennium in 2001. I plan on trying to review all the books that are on my read list (even though some of the reviews will be short). We’ll see if that works out. </about>

It gives a fascinating view of Chinese culture and also gives historical anecdotes that illustrate what each stratagem means. For example, Stratagem 2, “Besiege Wei to Rescue Zhao” gives a concise but fairly detailed historical account of the origin of this stratagem in which a general in pre-imperial China does not counter attack an aggressive army, but instead maneuvers to attack a weak spot in his enemy’s defenses and thus forces his enemy to call off the attack. The author then goes on to give other historical examples of how this stratagem can be employed.

The good thing about this book is not just its window into Chinese history and culture, but also the pragmatic lessons that can be derived from examining the tenets of strategic analysis. These lessons are broad enough that their principles can be applied in any scenario necessitating analytical competition. These are all primarily military lessons, but can be applied to a multitude of situations.

Read this book along with Sun Tzu’s The Art of War and the brilliant tale The Three Kingdoms to get excellent lessons on Chinese history and culture and also a fundamental introduction to strategic thinking.
