This was a very intense book, and I learned a lot from it. I didn't really know anything about the Morman religion, and so it was a good history lesson for me. It was also deeply disturbing and shocking to learn what has gone on in their history, and the injustices that have been done, especially to the young women who are a part of this group. It made me incredibly angry and frustrated because these perverse things are being done in the name of a faith in a loving god, and how can you honestly justify that?
I really enjoyed Krakauer's detached writing style. He had to make little commentary or put his own opinions out there--he simply had to rewrite what these people were telling him or report things that they have said or done, and that made it insane enough without him making an extra comment. They were fully able to make themselves look completely idiotic or insane without any help from him.
I wish that this had been a fiction book. Truly chilling that it is not. ...less

Somewhat of a dry read--very fact/report based, but very informational. He doesn't sensationalize his arguments or make ad hominem attacks; he simply reports on the changes throughout the church in the way that he sees it based on the church's unfortunate (and often hypocritical) tight ties to political groups and political leaders throughout the last several decades. I saw Balmer speak at UNL last year, so a lot of the information was repeated from his speech, but it is still a good reference to why current mainstream religious right leaders have chosen abortion, school vouchers, and school prayer as key issues, while ignoring or even insulting issues such as the environment or sustainability. Challenging and interesting read--definitely biased, as the cover shows, but he calmly and factually makes his arguments. He rightly points out that he will probably be "shunned" from the evangelical community after this publication, but I would hope that most people of faith would take the challenge of at least considering his arguments....less
