After reading this for the second time, I find that teaching books of this caliber in high school might not be the best idea. I read this for the first time in high school and hated it. I wasn't yet old enough to appreciate either the writing or the story. Reading it again, I finally saw the poetry of Steinbeck's descriptions. And in this time of recession, I found an understanding of the Joad's experience.
Distressing and powerful. The ending made me cry.(less)

A fun collection of essays by parents of toddlers. I enjoyed reading some essays by fathers, as I usually choose collections by mothers. I'm sure I'll be reading this as Tai gets older - it's good to know I'm not alone whether he's being angel or monster. Touching stories, funny stories, and stories that remind me it could be worse.(less)

I started reading Bechdel's comic 'Dykes to Watch Out For' in college and found myself unusually drawn in. When I discovered that her memoir in comics was the 'read of the month' for San Francisco I picked it up at the library. I enjoyed the detail of her drawing. I also thought it was cool to recognize some of the 'dykes' characters in the background.
An interesting peek into her relationship with her (closeted) father, and her own sexuality. I found myself wanting more. I felt like she kept us at a distance, though I understand her family is one that works at a distance. I hope she revisits the memoir genre.(less)

I enjoyed this book even more than Watchmen. The drawings were more simple, but they conveyed emotion more clearly. The plain black-and-white appealed to me, maybe because I prefer prose to drawings. I felt less distracted.
This is another book that could use a second reading because I know so little about Iran and its history, there were several times that I found myself confused about the politics.(less)

I'm not a comic book person, usually. I've made an exception for Buffy, and then I figured I'd better read this before seeing the movie. I'm always about the books before the movies.
I enjoyed this novel. I liked how they mixed comics and other forms of narrative (part of one of the heroes' 'books', a psych report, the comic within the comic). I found some of the philosophy interesting, especially the scene where Laurie tries to convince Jon of humanity's importance. Some of the morality felt too black and white, though that seems to be a facet of superhero comics in general.
I was disappointed at the ending, but I suppose to end any other way would have been too expected - and probably changed the commentary Moore was making. I should read this again sometime, for a more complete understanding.(less)

I spent much of the book giggling. I thought the second-to-last chapter was probably a better ending chapter, than the one she chose.(less)

I read Donohue's other book, "Stolen Child" and liked some of the same things about both of them. I enjoyed his poetic descriptions (not overdone) and his characters were compelling. I like that he left some things to mystery and didn't try to explain everything. A book about family and angels and loss.(less)
