This is an honest but sympathetic portrait of one of the titan's of American history. Though his vision is not as romanticized as that of the other Founders, today's America bears Hamilton's imprint far more than Jefferson's or Madison's. The robust industrial economy, the strong Executive, the "energetic" judiciary, and even the abolition of slavery were Hamiltonian ideas opposed by Jefferson's "democratic" minions. Chernow does a fantastic job chronicling Hamilton's remarkable political vision and accomplishments in the formative years of our republic. It's a must-read for students of American politics and even constitutional law.
Like most books about the Founding Generation, Chernow's book also brings the Founders down to earth. Their generation was made up of real men and women just like ours, and Hamilton is as fallible as any other. After reading this book you'll probably never find yourself saying something like "Politics is getting so polarized these days." You think it's bad today, just take a glimpse at how bitter things were at the beginning - complete with uncomfortably public sex scandals and all.
The book is also extremely well-written. It sent me to the dictionary more than any book I've read in a while....less

Morbid, brutal stories by a devout Southern Catholic. Quite the combination. My favorites are "A Good Man is Hard to Find" and "The Misfit." O'Conner's stories penetrate the most rotten underside of human nature and offer just a glimpse of the divine. If nothing else, you won't forget her stories....less
