I can't decide if I enjoyed this book even more than The Paper Magician. On one hand, it has more flaws. The setting is even more forced and unbelievable. There's minimal description that lends itself to the supposed time period and the plot doesn't ...more

I would like to give this 3.5 stars because I enjoyed it slightly more than The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up (to which I gave 3 stars), but I really didn't enjoy it at a four-star level either.
I should have known what I was getting into at the v

I really enjoyed this book. It has some pacing issues, and the time period is forced (It's set in early 1900s London, for no apparent reason, and the way the characters speak doesn't really reflect that) but the plot is so unusual and the personaliti ...more

I did not like this book as much as The Sweet Life, but this book is much more cookbook and less memoir. That made for a much faster read, of course, since I didn't read every line of every recipe in its entirety. The pacing of the cookbook is good. ...more

Good mix of recipes and Parisian anecdotes. Some of his experiences were relatable, some of them seemed cliché, some of them seemed unlikely. Enjoyed it enough to want to read more of his stuff. I also have a list of recipes I want to try now!

This was my Kindle First pick for July. This is honestly the first time I've ever picked a book so early in the month, never mind actually finishing it already! Set in Paris - it was a no brainer. Boy was it a mistake.

Ok, Let's start with the positiv

I'm not sure I liked this book as much as the other two. It kind of got away from itself. By that, I mean, the world that was built up in the first two just got so so big and complicated by this one. But I suppose that's what has to happen for the pl ...more

J.R.R. Tolkien
“All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.

From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.”
J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

Nick Hornby
“In the old days, when he flew a lot, he'd never been able to get absorbed in a book until the plane had taken off, so he'd spent the pre-boarding time flicking through magazines and browsing in gift shops, and that's what the last couple of decades had felt like: one long flick through a magazine. If he'd known how long he was going to spend in the airport lounge of his own life, he'd have made different travel arrangements, but instead he'd sat there, sighing and fidgeting and, more often than was ever really acceptable, snapping at his traveling companions.”
Nick Hornby, Juliet, Naked
