Less then Zero by Bret Easton Ellis is a book commenting upon a generation of nihilist wrought with passivity. CLay, a rich college student back in LA on vacation from school, reunites with various friends and acquaintances, usually doing loads of cocaine. Clay grows more and more alienated as the book goes on; he realizes that his friends have no direction, but care not to find one either. Heroin, male prostitution, and a dead body are all occurrences in Less Then Zero that lead to possibly Clay's final departure from Los Angeles. A gripping story of a lost generation, a must read....less

Glamorama, written by Bret Easton Ellis, deals with America's obsession with beauty and celebrities. A satire at heart, the novel is bloody and gruesome. THe story is centered around Victor Ward; a male model hoping to make it in the film industry. Victor Ward is sent to Europe to find an old girlfriend, but ends out being accepted, or rather forced, into a terrorist organization run my supermodels and ex-supermodels. At first the book may seem trivial, yet the deeper you go the deeper it gets. Full of unexpected twists and turns, you will not want to put it this book down....less

Junky by William S Burroughs is definitevly one of my new favorite books. Burroughs open account of his use of herion and morphine is captivating and enthralling. The book demands attention, and Burroughs does an amazing job of holding that attention. The book is primarily about the beginings of Burroughs long history of heroin/morphine use. The book is written as if Burroughs is on the outside looking in. Burroughs describes the lengths at which he and his coherts had to take to get morphine and heroin in NYC, his trip to a rehabilitation facility in Kentucky, his stay in New Orleans, and finally to Mexico City. The book for me is Burroughs search for meaning in life. He seems to always come back to his addiction, regardless of the lengths he takes to put it off for several months at a time. All in all, Junky by William S Burroughs is a dark, surreal, realistic account of Burroughs precedings with morphine in the 1950's, and i highly recomend it to any reader. ...less

"The Doors of Perception" by Aldous Huxley is about mescaline. Mescaline is the psycho-active substance in peyote. Huxley writes about his experience with mescaline, and his mind opening experience. Supposedly, Huxley's account of his mescaline experience and his explanation there after is one of the most in depth and detailed studies on what mescaline can teach, as well as how the mind works. Huxley firmly believed that taking mescaline would open the doors of perception. He does an in depth analysis of the world around him through an interview taken while he was 'tripping'. Huxley attempts to reach parts of consciousness that normally, without psychedelic-drugs, are unreachable. He states that the mind opens up to the world about one's self and things lose function/form and become what he calls "as such". When on mescaline, what we as humans have created as dimensions and space and time disappear and become irrelevant. Huxley's account of his experience is awesome....less

Hubert Selby Jr is by far one of my favorite authors. Selby's gut wrenching details, coupled with his intimate dialogue produce a book that i never wanted to put down. The story is mainly about two friends, Tyrone C. Love and Harry Goldfarb, as well as Harry's girlfriend Marion and his mother Sara. The book primarily has three phases; summer, fall, and winter. Throughout the seasons, their addictions begin an accent towards destruction. Harry and Tyrone begin selling heroin and dream of getting their own pound of pure from the 'eye-talians'. While Harry and Tyrone are struggling with an increasing heroin addiction, Sara has been put on amphetamines in order to lose weight for a TV show she was "selected" to be on. Her addictions becomes severe, including hallucinations and a requirement for a Valium prescription. For Sara she is attempting to escape her never-ending loneliness after the death of her husband and Harry never being around. A bevy of precarious situations tug and pull at the story from every side. Sara eventually needs hospitalization after a freak out ending at the television station. She had to undergo shock therapy, devastating her mental faculties even further. Harry and Tyrone end up trying to go to Florida to cop a pound of pure, and end up in a southern jail with Harry's arm rotting away from re-use of needles. Harry eventually needs his arm amputated and Tyrone gets stuck in jail down south. I dont think i should give any more away! Ultimately the story is dwells upon the idea of escapism, and how people cope with their circumstances, often relying on drugs. Selby himself was a heroin addict for many years, and his personal insight into the world that he creates is undeniably real. ...less
