My son and i made it through the 1st and 2nd books in the "Dark Materials" trilogy, but we could not even finish this one. the story just kept getting progressively more bizarre. while we are not overly religious, the anti-Catholic theme became so heavy that it was impossible to follow the story anymore. it is a shame that a series that started with the totally enjoyable "The Golden Compass", ended up in such a mess as this. to emphasize, we gave up with less than 100 pages to go, after more then 300 pages of reading...don't waste your time too.

this is a very interesting book about how the Chinese likely discovered the world in the early 15th century, well before Columbus and Magellan. the author makes a good case, based on various historical records, that before the meltdown of a great emperor, China was in the process of dominating the Earth. then, the Chinese closed their world and tried to shutout the rest until well into the modern era. it is very thought provoking to imagine what might have happened, except for one bolt of lightning. only reason i did not go 5 stars is that the book could have used a good editing, sometimes the author is very repetitive and sometimes he goes a little too far in linking together fairly circumstantial evidence. still i was fascinated throughout. the exploration of Chinese culture was a great fit for the Olympics time... :)

i am a big fan of Greg Bear's and this book was no disappointment. the story is a near future telling of high tech terrorism and law enforcement. the author creates a very plausible scenario where biotech weapons are threatened to be used by terrorists. the many extrapolations of well known technology for both the good guys and the bad guys are fascinating. Bear consults with the gov't on "what if?" type scenarios and has very good relations with the FBI, so a lot of the basic info is very well done and very believable. hopefullly, the story itself is far out science fiction, because it is one of the things that i worry about most for the future of the planet. a great read with tons of action and pretty reasonable character develoment for a thriller. ...less

This book is an excellent in depth look at how great (or at least, very good) pitchers pitch. the author chose to follow the 2007 for two highly regarded pitchers, Mike Mussina from the Yankees and Tom Glavine with the Mets. the "year in the life" approach really works as the pitchers face hard times, injuries, winning streaks, losing streaks, great personal milestones, contract discussions, and about 35 games of baseball each. for many of the games, the author goes through the game each batter in sequence, detailing where the pitchers got in trouble, in their own words. if you are a hard core baseball fan, you will like this book....less

i am a huge fan of Matthew Reilly's and have read all of his books...that being said, i came away from "The Six Sacred Stones" pretty disappointed. it turns out that this book, which is a sequel to "The Seven Deadly Wonders", is only the 2nd book in a planned trilogy, so we get 600+ more pages of action with no wrap up. in the paperback edition which i read, there was included in the back a few pages of an interview with the author. he makes it clear that he is trying to write a "Lord of the Rings" type set of books for the action genre. what is less clear is whether the action genres needs this product. Reilly's books are unbelievable enough in general...stretching them even further to make a 3 book story arc has pretty broken any possibility of "willing suspension of disbelief". the action is still good, the writing is tight, but it just keeps going on. after 2 books of this, i will definitely go ahead and read the last book when it comes out, but i can't wait for Reilly to get back to writing simpler stories....less

I was really looking forward to this book, but found it very disappointing. the book is really just a collection of 2-4 page vignettes about Rickles's career, friends and family. some of the short stories are touching, some are funny, but mostly they just are... as Rickles point out several time during the book, his comedy does not come across in writing that well. the most interesting stuff is about Rickles' life long friendship with Sinatra. it would have been a better book, if he had just focused on this relationship....less
