Let's keep this simple -- Glück sometimes says the things that would be better left implied, but then there are lines like these:

It is snowing on earth; the cold wind says

Persephone is having sex in hell.
Unlike the rest of us she doesn't know
what winter is, only that
she is what causes it.

What no one tells you about women's college is that, your first night there, they have you dress in ceremonial robes and read this book by candlelight. If you finish by dawn, you get to stay; if not, they ship you off to the nearest state school.

Passable for the first hundred pages or so, but this novel gets dragged down by uneven pacing and a dearth of any real plot development for several chapters. Whether those issues are the fault of the writer or editor, I'm not sure -- in any case, I keep inching this one ever closer to the edge of my bed. I'll give it a week before banishing it entirely.
