I'm a sucker for extended metaphors, messing around with form and unrelenting big-hearted earnestness, and my favorite pieces here -- "Nostalgia," about sex in the media; "The Perfect Gerbil," about Barthelme's "The School"; "The United States of Huck"; and "Manifesto," about living with war -- are thrilling.

The less good pieces are a little forced and puppy doggish, but we can live with that.

I'm sure it's cliche to call Saunders DFW without the mental illness, but that pretty much captures it.

Like the Wire, it's a little out of date now, a little overly hopeful. Definitely constructed by a man with an agenda. But it's persuasive and could be of use in building something that will last or finding places that will.
