When my sister-in-law told me that this was "a book of poems," I cast a leery eye. But then I picked it up and read 100 pages before I knew what happened. This book is amazingly compelling, and I finished it in less than a day. Could someone read it and discuss the ending with me?(less)

I thought Gilead, although slow, was really comforting. It's probably too mellow for most, but Marilynne Robinson's immersion into the pace and language of Iowa was right on to me. The ending has a much higher velocity than the rest of the book (um, still not crazy fast, but there's more acceleration), and I thought the conclusion was satisfying. It's just a very steady, quiet book, and I liked that.(less)

The Weight of Heaven is tough book to read because its content is so difficult: death, marriage struggles, alienation, and political unrest. Thrity Umrigar’s rich language creates a compelling read with a tight, fast-moving finish that was worth the tension.

I rarely read mysteries, so maybe I'm just not keyed in to the genre, but I sort of expected to know what the heck happened at the end of the book. Did I miss something? After getting attached to the characters, I felt like I had been cheated by the fizzled-out ending.(less)
