True, another great series. I remember specifically the circumstances surrounding my reading of that series. I was visiting my grandparents in Tennessee, I must have been 10 years old, maybe 11. After a week of sitting around their house, repeatedly hitting a tennis ball against the wall, I convinced my mother to take me to the library in Kingsport. Lord did that town ever smell awful. I haven't been back there in years but I can still recall as clear as yesterday the Eastman Kodak smell that permeated everything and never EVER went away, regardless of the season or wind. You could smell your own olfactory nerves burning.

I remember kind of gambling on this series -- since I could only take out so many books, I was rolling the dice with Lloyd Alexander and his strange Welsh names. But obviously it was the right choice and I spent the next couple of days furiously attacking these books, desperate to finish them before I had to leave Kingsport and return them to the library. I must have been convinced that they must be some strange, rare series. Little did I realize that they were quite well known and available in basically every Bradlees and Encore Books on the 95 corridor.

I also remember the Chronicles of Prydain computer game being particularly enjoyable -- okay, by 1988 standards, but enjoyable nonetheless. That was back in the days of swapping the series of floppy disks in and out when your character scrolled off the edge of the screen. I haven't checked but I wouldn't be surprised if someone had remade this game complete with virtual pig smell and first person sword action. Most likely they are in pre-production of a movie directed by Peter Jackson and starring Tobey Maguire.
