This book is a great novel about the life of Garp, a growing writer. And even though, a majority of the book is about him growing up, as an adult he is constantly developing. Constantly growing. It's a great book about hope, life, death, children, marriage, love. All these aspects of human life combined into one tasteful novel. The book takes many attempts to depict the life of a writer. This depiction is, in contrast to many novels, an ugly portrayal of life. It's not the typical normal life. Irving does a splendid job in describing the life of Garp.
In The World According To Garp, Irving approaches many sensitive topics in a serene matter. The language is excellent and fluid. He speaks about sex, disloyalty, the hardship of marriage. The switch of marriage role is even expressed through this excellent novel. Irving's masterpiece is different and a great read. I'll recommend it to anyone. ...less

I picked this book out because I thought there could have been some connections I could have made with it, considering my heritage is also Chinese. This book was however a book that didn't quite capture any essence of true culture. It was more of a narrative about how the protagonist's childhood was horrid and negative. A majority of the book was insignificant and I didn't really understand why I was reading this book. It didn't make a lot of sense to me. It was a book that, in ways, asked for pity points. It was a retell of her life and childhood, how she was picked on by her siblings and her stepmother was a witch. Within this novel is a retell of the protagonist's family and her own heritage. Some parts were well written. Parts that described her father and her siblings treatment towards her was well written. However, besides that, i did feel as if the book lacked a lot of substance. I wouldn't recommend it....less

Jane Eyre is a classical romance novel about an orphan raised by her cruel aunt, Mrs. Reed after Jane’s parents and uncle died. Jane is sent to Lowood School where she meets and befriends Helen Burns. Their close relationship is torn apart when an epidemic hits the school and Helen loses her fight against the disease. Jane finishes her education and teaches at Lowood for two years before she accepts the job as a governess at a manor called Thornfield, employed by Mr. Rochester. After some time, the two fall in love and Rochester proposes to Jane in which she accepts. During the wedding, it is revealed that Rochester is married and his wife is still living. Rochester confirms this, revealing that Bertha Mason, his insane wife is living on the third floor in Thornfield. Torn apart and driven to tears, Jane flees, knowing that she can never be together with Rochester. Homeless and penniless, Jane is forced to live on the streets. The Rivers siblings come along and take her in and announces one day that they are actually Jane’s cousins. One of the siblings, St. Johns, proposes to her and to accompany him to India. With Rochester still in her heart, Jane rejects St. Johns. Jane returns to Thornfield to find that it has been burned down by Bertha who lost her life in the accident. Rochester was also blinded in the fire. After being separated a year, Jane and Rochester are finally able to marry and live a happy life together. Jane Eyre is definitely an emotive and touching romance novel....less

When I first began to read this book in a book group, I thought it was interesting and pretty good. As story drags on, I found the book to be so annoying. I couldn't help but hate the main character who is a young boy with a learning disability. He gets very irritating and I just simply can't see how a whole novel can be based around this so called mystery. I found the title was based upon a very insignificant event in the book. Maybe I'm missing something, but I didn't enjoy this book at all....less
