Senhor Jose is endearing in his comic frailties. " . . . the strange adventure into which chance had plunged him . . . " in my opinion, was not chance at all. He was yearning for a "life" (a girl friend, an adventure) and he found it by hiding behind his fabricated duties at the Central Registry. Too timid to find a real woman, he got involved with a "name." At first, I was thrown off by Jose Saramago's writing style (no punctuation). Once I got used to it, the writing really flowed and I loved the story. I'm certain there were subtle nuances in the book that went right over my head, but I still enjoyed it....less

I have been a Joyce Carol Oates fan forever, and "Beasts" is in her classic style. This dark story hooked me in the first paragraph, and I read voraciously to the last page. The book has a panicky feel to it and, as always, JCO is the master of character development. My paperback copy is signed by the author, when she was at the Seattle Library earlier this year.

Greg Mortenson ~ what a guy! I loved following Greg's story from macho mountain-climber to selfless humanitarian. Lost in the mountains after climbing K2, he is nurtured back to health by some villagers in a remote settlement in the mountains of Pakistan. The children in the village attended school outdoors in the cold, with no supplies (they used sticks to scratch out their multiplication tables in the ice and mud), and the government said there was no funding for a full-time teacher, so they sent someone around every few weeks. When Greg was well enough to return home, he promised he would return one day and build them a school. He had no funding and no idea how he would accomplish this, and his story is truly amazing. I had the honor of meeting Greg Mortenson at the Douglass-Truth Library in Seattle, where he spoke and then signed copies of his book. He is so calm and unhurried. I have purchased and handed out several copies of his wonderful book and contributed to his cause....less

I thought Disgrace was an engrossing book. I immersed myself in it, and finished it quickly. It left me slightly depressed, which means it's a good book. Whenever a book affects me emotionally, the author has done well. The story was almost too bleak, though. It's about a professor who's professional life is ruined by an affair with a student. He goes back to Africa, where he was born, and stays with his daughter, who has problems, but is very pragmatic. There was nothing happpy about this book. But I still think it's worthwhile. I liked it better than Coetzee's "Slow Man" but not nearly as much as "Youth."...less
