Uhhgh- Stopped after a couple chapters. Haven't read Irving in a while, and never his non-fiction, but he feels very unimpressive here. And this book strikes me as too much of a vanity project...he was on the cover of vanity fair, after all...

OK- some of the material I had previously seen in The New Yorker or heard on This American Life, but reading the memoir, broken up into essentially sequential sections, was both gripping in a real-life way, and enlightening. An interesting perspective on Orthodox Jewish culture, Auslander's superstitious relationship with God, and impressive he's come out so well considering the family he grew up in. A great read on several levels.

Hi Jean, Sometimes it gets a bit too academic/analytical to be fun, which is probably why you dropped it (I actually have it on hold now) But some of the pieces are more anecdotal, and his insights are often brilliant, so maybe try a few of them.
