Rusty and his best friend/next-door neighbor Joey have all kinds of summertime boy adventures, from putting a frog into Joey's sister's underwear drawer, to shooting a BB gun (with not so good consequences for the local squirrels) to swimming, jumping and hanging out on the river. After each escapade that results in something they'd rather their parents not know, they "swear to howdy" with blood that they'll never reveal their secrets to anyone. No matter what. But when lighthearted fun and pranks turn tragic, will Joey be able to keep a really important secret, one that's tearing him and his best friend up inside and threatening their friendship? (less)

Can I give a book six stars?? I LOVED this! First book in a new series that comes out in October, set in a country where the Clans (artisan and warrior tribes who live in harmony with nature, a lot like Native Americans) and the Valefolk (valley/city dwellers) have lived in an uneasy truce with wizards, derisively called "jinxflingers," who use clan artifacts to conduct magic. There's a great spunky princess who chafes at palace life and her prospects for an arranged political marriage, a street lord ragamuffin thief who has one foot in the clan world while trying to support his family in the slums, and many other characters both dark and light, disloyal and true. Nice romance--I love a girl who has so many cool guys to choose from, all with their attractions and faults--and plenty of magic, danger, and mystery. Put it on your must-read list if you like high fantasy adventure.(less)

A story about a girl who's trying to stay clean and out of trouble in a troubled neighborhood, where gangs and drugs are prevalent and no one's got money. Raspberry is always trying to make money to better her and her mom's life, but when her mother's beaten up by an angry teen neighbor and her druggie dad steals her hard earned cash, Raspberry starts to unravel a bit. There's also the strained situation between her and her best friend Zora, due to their parents dating and money issues. Realistic look at inner city life and has good strong characters who are trying to rise above tough circumstances.(less)

This is the saddest book I've read in a long time. Just warning you. If you like Lurlene McDaniel books, you'll love this. The summer before 11th grade, Natalie is planning to hang out with her friends, go "pool hopping" in pools at night, and try not to think about the fact that her older sister Claire is leaving for college in 7 weeks. The two of them share a room, clothes, and many adventures; they are very close. But in the blink of an eye everything changes, when Claire is hit by a car and lapses into a coma. The rest of the book is about how the family adjusts, how Nat's and Claire's friends adjust, and primarily how Natalie deals with this tragedy. Gotta tell ya, if you listen to it on audio be prepared to sniffle. Wrenchingly emotional. Very well written. (I only gave it three stars because I don't like sad books!)(less)

Wonderful book about a boy who gets caught up in World War II events in Burma. Nick is sent from the bombings of London to live with his (divorced) father on his teak plantation. Nick is learning how to train elephants to log timber, and other details for eventually taking over his father's job, but soon the Japanese invade and everything changes. Nick and his new friend Mya, a Burmese girl whose father is an elephant "mahout," are taken prisoner in their own home, while Nick's father is sent to a labor camp to build railways for the invading army. Events in this book move very quickly and there's a lot of action and suspense; I enjoyed that but also the setting, which is really unique. There's an interesting amount of detail about Buddhism (one main character is an old Buddhist monk), the countryside of Burma, and elephant life in particular. A different look at the war, and at elephants, for a teen novel.(less)

From the author of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series, this book is about 3 girls who live in the same town as the Sisterhood, and the Sisterhood girls are famous in their high school. But Polly, Jo and Ama never met the Pants girls, they only wished growing up that they could find a talisman item like the Pants to symbolize their friendship. Now, the summer before 9th grade, Polly, Jo and Ama have grown apart. They're awkward around each other, they're not really friends any more, for no particular reasons. And they're embarking on different journeys this summer: Ama, never an outdoorsy girl, gets put in a wilderness leadership camp out West, where she is miserable on hikes and putting up with bugs and (gasp!) no hair products! Jo gets a summer job at the beach and finds out her parents are getting a divorce. But there's this hot guy who kisses her on the bus, totally out of the blue. hmmm, romance? And Polly, left behind while her friends travel, decides she wants to go to modeling camp. But it's going to be harder than she thought. A nice book about rediscovering friendship and finding one's own way at the same time. (less)
