I'd been hearing so many raves from so many people about this book ( Ash, Steve, Annie, Brad's parents, etc ) and decided that I should probably pick it up to see what all of the hype was about. Now, I get it.
What an incredible book. Although it's over 400 pages long, I think that I read it in about 2-3 days - I just couldn't put it down. The characters were so interesting, and were so well described (you felt as though you knew several of them personally, and could just picture them ) the story line was fantastic and did such an amazing job of holding your attention - between historical facts, inventions, a murder spree, famous people, and life and time in the 1890's it was fascinating.
I spent most of the time imagining that I was there while the Worlds Fair was being built, and the sights, sounds, and wonder that it all would bring. Also, I kept reminding myself that this entire story was completely historically accurate and these people, places, and events all really occurred. How cool!
Hands down one of my favorite books in awhile - highly recommended!...less

A very quick and powerful read. I hadn't read this book since I was in school, but after thinking about how much I just loved East of Eden, I thought I'd pick this one up as well. Surprisingly, I completely remembered the story, but loved re-reading it nonetheless. I love how it describes in such amazing detail just how much riches, or possessions can control you. Even for a humble fisherman such as Kino, who has no other intentions than providing for his family and doing good - he ultimately becomes so obsessed that his fortune becomes his demise. I think it's a great book to remind us that material possessions can't make us happy no matter how much we think they may....less

I picked this book up after reading the back cover and thinking it looked really interesting. It's about a girl who leaves her friends and family behind to go on a mission trip of sorts in Indonesia. What starts out as a great experience (making new friends, building a church, relationships with the local Christian villagers, etc) turns into a religious war of sorts between the Muslims and Christians in neighboring villages. The main character, and the others are forced to flee the village, and make their way through the jungle being pursued, battling wild pigs, snakes, and malaria and ultimately making their way back to civilization. It was a really good book, easy read, and while it seemed a little young ( more geared towards teens I think ) I really enjoyed it....less

Always a fan of Jodi Picoult books ( thank again Erin for turning me onto her so many years ago )and this was another one that didn't disappoint. While I find that all of her books seem to follow a similiar pattern, it doesn't bother me a bit because the characters are always different and well thought out, the location and and stories are different, as is the outcome. I also like her because I think she has a really good grasp on teenagers today ( which are usually the main subjects of her novels ), and it's always interesting to me just how different being a teenager is from when I was growing up. Gotta love Jodi Picoult books! =)...less

Okay, so I really got into this book at first and thought it was going to be another East of Eden for me. Loved the characters, loved the plot, loved the fairy tale aspect of it all. But, as I got into it further I started getting confused and at times found my mind wandering elsewhere. You know how you read a page, get to the end and have NO idea what you just read? Well it was kind of like that. There were times when I couldn't put it down and times when I was bored to tears. Also, the whole "same name" thing was really throwing me, and I had to look at the family tree about a million times. I'm all for thinking, and depth in a book but that just kinda rubbed me the wrong way. I think when it boils down, it was a pretty good book ( I got through it ) but I don't really understand what all the hype is about. I'm going to give Love in a Time of Cholera a shot, however, as I've heard that it's excellent - and I want to give this author another shot....less
