I unfortunately got this book in on hold when I was only in the mood for reading British chick lit. So although it covers my favorite topic, King Arthur, in an allegedly new and exciting way and seemed promising, I could only get a couple chapters in before I needed much less Merlin and much more romantic comedy.

In all honesty, I didn't finish this one. Not that I didn't like it, but I found I just didn't care that much about the characters. It's not that it wasn't somewhat clever and funny, but it left me feeling "meh". Maybe it was just my mood that day, as it was a finalist for the National Book Award and a Best Book for Young Adults. Not that I have to like every award winning book, but, you know. I felt like I SHOULD like it. Maybe I'll try again in a few months.

I thought I would love this book. And I did like it, but... here is where I will take my stand on books written by adults that like to imagine that modern day high school kids are way more cool than I suspect they actually are. I mean, things have come along way since the early 90's, but I really have a hard time believing that a moajority of high school kids are in punk bands or are aspiring fashion designers and they are all totally music geeks. And they like good music. Really? Aside from that, I was slightly iritated by the supporting characters and some of the lingo, but all in all, not bad and definitely recommendable to cool teen girls.

There is some psychic action, but Vibes is more of a The Earth, My Butt or Big Fat Manifesto style bitter-sweet coming of age tale than a fun ESP romp. There is romance though, so it's not all agony and tears.

I'm not really sure how to categorize this one, genre wise. There are paranormal and mystery/thriller elements, there is witchcraft and secret societies and a boarding school. But it's not a paranormal romance, so don't expect any sexy teen girl/wolf makeout scenes. I really didn't know what was going on until the end, and I won't give it away if this intrigues anyone. The language is somewhat stilted, which may be an effect of translation from the German, but a compelling and original story none the less.

I was hoping I'd love this, but it just didn't hold my attention. I wanted another Georgia Nicholson, but got more of, I don't know, the villainous teen from an ABC family movie. And I like ABC family movies, but I guess I demand more from a book. I might be too harsh, because I didn't actually finish it though. It's worth a try if you like British chick books, you might fare better than me.

After trying to read a few J and YA medieval historicals that were badly marred by 20th century quips and unbelievable dialog, the Youngest Templar scratched my knightly itch. Really compelling, well written and it's the beginning of a series. And it has Templars and Robin Hood! What more could you want?
