I love the depth of Frances Brody's knowledge of her place and her period. Despite a sometimes fairly farfetched plot and a band of sometimes outrageously eccentric characters, I never felt I was anywhere or anywhen other than Yorkshire in the 20s. F ...more

The King's Falcon by Stella Riley
"The King’s Falcon is the long-awaited third instalment of Ms Riley’s projected quartet of novels set during the tumultuous period of the English Civil War. The two earlier books – The Black Madonna and Garland of Straw – were originally published..." Read more of this review »

Dodie Smith
“Noble deeds and hot baths are the best cures for depression.”
Dodie Smith, I Capture the Castle

“I agree that it's a shame some books have to suffer ratings that clearly are invalid. However I can't think of a way to prevent it, and I didn't see any ideas in the thread either (I did skim though).

I hope you'll appreciate that if we just start deleting ratings whenever we feel like it, that we've gone down a censorship road that doesn't take us to a good place.”
Otis Y. Chandler

Kate Atkinson
“Why do cats sleep so much? Perhaps they've been trusted with some major cosmic task, an essential law of physics - such as: if there are less than 5 million cats sleeping at any one time the world will stop spinning. So that when you look at them and think, "what a lazy, good-for-nothing animal," they are, in fact, working very, very hard.”
Kate Atkinson

Jane Austen
“The person, be it gentleman or lady, who has not pleasure in a good novel, must be intolerably stupid.”
Jane Austen

“Properly practiced, knitting soothes the troubled spirit, and it doesn't hurt the untroubled spirit either.”
Elizabeth Zimmermann
