a collection of Clarke's short sci-fi stories from the 60's; largely short, scientifically detailed, "hard" sci-fi stories still focusing on the human element, with many inventive twist-endings, but still fairly unremarkable, especially considering his novels. however, the final story, "A Meeting with Medusa" is much longer and obviously much more ambitious, thoroughly researched, masterfully executed, a masterpiece in fact, and still by far the most in depth description of actual Jovian exploration i've ever read, so much so that Carl Sagan's much later description in the non-fiction science tome / TV series "Cosmos" sticks remarkably close to this original (albeit with AWESOME illustrations!), even after Sagan published a scientific paper on the topic. but Clarke was something of a "real" scientist after all.) ]]>

what is the point of this list? the book is _always_ better than the movie, i thought this was obvious? i usually try to see the movie first so as not to be dismally dissapointed and give the film a chance... biggest dissapointment? "Jurassic Park"! incredible book, but GAH! what a monstrosity they made.P
of the endless examples i can think of, there is only one film i can say i enjoyed more (the ORIGINAL "Solyaris") and maybe one or two i thought were of comparable quality (such as "Fear and Loathing...") so, if overwhelmingly practically all of them are better, isn't this list completely pointless and unecessary? but i guess this post is as well...P ah, the internet...) ]]>
