The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation is a style manual that provides "uniform" guidelines for citing legal material in court papers and/or periodicals. It is compiled by the Harvard Law Review Association, the Columbia Law Review, the University of Pennsylvania Law Review, and the Yale Law Journal. All of these journals are student run legal journals.
Overall, the eighteenth edition is organized well, and information is fairly easy to find. But, the index is fairly useless. There is not enough "cross-referencing" in the index, so if you do not think of the exact word or phrase that the editors used as the reference, then you will not be able to find the material. Also, examples of how to cite any particular source tend to be scattered throughout the book. The "easy" citations tend to be condensed and located in easily accessible areas, but the more difficult citations (that people would actually use the Bluebook in order to properly cite) are harder to find in the Bluebook. I often feel like I'm going on a hide-and-go-seek mission with the information and/or examples.
Hopefully, the nineteenth edition will have a better index, and a better list of examples for citing particular kinds of sources....less

In Water for Elephants, Sara Gruen spins a fascinating tale of murder, love, obsession, and life. Although the ending was more than a little bit unbelievable, the characters were interesting and well developed. Sara Gruen knows how to write old people and making them interesting and true to form, without being stereotypical. That's a very difficult thing to do, and not many authors have ever accomplished unraveling the story of someone who has aged as well as she has.
Her portrayal of circus life is fascinating, particularly because it was so researched. And, her characters never failed to invoke strong feelings of endearment, horror, amusement, or pity.
I wouldn't call this a "must read," but it is definitely an interesting story that was well written and well researched. Sara Gruen did her homework and made her homework interesting. That's an accomplishment in and of itself....less

In the preface to the newest translation of Night, Elie Wiesel writes, "If in my lifetime I was to write only one book, this would be the one."
I love to read. Books are like air to me. Books are my vice. All kinds of books. Classics. Biographies. Romance. Memoirs. Chick-lit. Books on politics. Mysteries. So long as the literary style is readable, I'll read it, whatever it might be.
But if, in my lifetime, I was to read only one book, Night would be that book.
The original Yiddish version of Night opened with the following narrative:
In the beginning there was faith—which is childish; trust—which is vain; and illusion—which is dangerous.
We believed in God, trusted in man, and lived with the illusion that every one of us has been entrusted with a sacred spark from the Shekhinah's flame; that every one of us carries in his eyes and in his soul a reflection of God's image.
That was the source if not the cause of all our ordeals.
That quote was cut from the version that eventually made print, but it resonates.
People generally dwell, for a short time, on the horror we inflict on one another, through mishap or purpose, and then we forget. Memories slip through the cracks of our minds, and we move on. Live on. Until we repeat the terrifying mistakes of before.
Night is a book dedicated to remembering. And, the picture it paints is so clear—so vivid that you can reach out and touch it.
Read this book.
If you only read one book in your lifetime, read this book. You'll want to look away. You'll want to set it aside. Because, you see the danger, long before it presents itself, and you hear their cries long after they have been silenced.
Read this book....less
